The Reverdin-lsham Procedure for the Correction of Hallux Abducto Valgus

Advantages of the Procedure

  1. Good healing is due to the placement of the osteotomy in metaphyseal bone.
  2. Minimal fixation (internal or external) is required because the procedure is intracapsular and compressed by the retrograde force of the hallux.
  3. It provides biplane correction of the structural deformity with improved positions of sesamoids.
  4. It involves a minimal amount of postoperative disability, similar to the minimal incision Silver-Akin procedure.
  5. It can be performed on children prior to epiphyseal closure because the ephiphysis is located at the metatarsal base.
  6. It can be performed in the presence of uncontrollable pronatory forces.
  7. The average reduction of the intermetatarsal angle of 7° has been noted, especially when the procedure is performed with the Akin procedure.

Disadvantages of the Procedure

  1. The sagittal plane deformity may not be corrected; however, with reduction of the first intermetatarsal angle, relative sagittal plane correction is noted.
  2. If poor healing takes place at the osteotomy site, possible shortening of the metatarsal may occur.
